Just coming on here tonight to mention movies I’ve been watching lately. Beginning with “Pet Sematary” last night. Watched it many years ago, then after listening to Stephen King interviews and then his audiobook for On Writing, I was spurred to give the film another go. And I gotta say, it was pretty dumb. Can’t recall the book since it’s been far too long since I read it, but talk about a horror movie where the protagonist does everything he ought not. Just struck me as a story intended to drive the plot. Bury the cat and it comes back evil, so let’s bury the kid, and yep, he comes back evil too — so now let’s bury the wife in that cemetery too. What can possibly go wrong? And the neighbor man? Was he just trying to start trouble or truly that naive? Makes little sense either way.
And this is a big reason why I gave up on the horror genre many moons ago, having watched my fill as a kid and a teen.
However, tonight I am watching the movie “Stonehearst Asylum” and rather enjoying it. Not scary, no, but has an interesting twist nevertheless. Says it’s based on a story by Edgar Allan Poe. So, back to viewing now.
Next night’s film, “Never Sleep Again: The Elm Street Legacy,” about the making of all the Freddy Krueger movies.
