A cold January Friday night in with tunes

Thought of a few other songs worth posting up on here this week.

Beginning with “Black Velvet” by Alannah Myles:

Loved that one since way, way back. Vaguely remember the music video. Beautiful woman there.

Next up, “Set adrift on Memory Bliss” by PM Dawn:

…  Subterranean by design
I wonder what I would find if I met you
Let my eyes caress you
Until I meet the thought of Missess Princess Who?

Often wonder what makes her work
I guess I’ll leave that question to the experts
Assuming that there are some out there
They’re probably alone, solitaire

Careless whisper from a careless man
A neutron dance for a neutron fan
Marionette strings are dangerous things
I thought of all the trouble they bring

An eye for an eye, a spy for a spy
rubber bands expand in a frustrating sigh
Tell me that she’s not dreaming
She’s got an ace in the hole, it doesn’t have meaning

Reality used to be a friend of mine
’cause complete control, I don’t take too kind…

Baby, you send me
Baby, you send me
Set adrift on memory bliss of you…

Never tire of that tune.

Another good one, Mark Morrison’s “Return Of The Mack”:

Always enjoy that one.

Well I tried to tell you so (yes, I did)
But I guess you didn’t know, as I said the story goes
Baby, now I got the flow
‘Cause I knew it from the start
Baby, when you broke my heart
That I had to come again, and show you that I’m real

(You lied to me) All those times I said that I love you
(You lied to me) Yes, I tried, yes, I tried
(You lied to me) Even though you know I’d die for you
(You lied to me) Yes, I cried, yes, I cried

[Chorus:]
(Return of the Mack) It is
(Return of the Mack) Come on
(Return of the Mack) Oh my God
(You know that I’ll be back) Here I am
(Return of the Mack) Once again
(Return of the Mack) Pump up the world
(Return of the Mack) Watch my flow
(You know that I’ll be back) Here I go

So I’m back up in the game
Running things to keep my swing
Letting all the people know
That I’m back to run the show
‘Cause what you did, you know, was wrong
And all the nasty things you’ve done
So, baby, listen carefully
While I sing my come-back song

(You lied to me) ‘Cause she said she’d never turn on me
(You lied to me) But you did, but you do
(You lied to me) All these pains you said I’d never feel
(You lied to me) But I do, but I do, do, do

(Return of the Mack) Here it is
(Return of the Mack) Hold on
(Return of the Mack) Don’t you know
(You know that I’ll be back) Here I go
(Return of the Mack) Oh little girl
(Return of the Mack) Wants my pearl
(Return of the Mack) Up and down
(You know that I’ll be back) Round and round

Yep. I did. Just going to leave that right there for the evening…

Another I happen to enjoy, “I Got 5 On It” by Luniz:

Another goodie, The Fugees’ “Ready Or Not”:

Loved that one since it came out early in my teen years.

A born-again hooligan only to be king again

Probably my favorite lyrics in the whole song.

That and:

I play my enemies like a game of chess…
No stress

I can do what you do, easy, believe me
Frontin’ niggas give me hee-bee-gee-bees
So while you’re imitating Al Capone, I’ll be Nina Simone
And defecating on your microphone

Speaking of Nina Simone…

That was a fan video of her rendition of the song “I Put A Spell On You.” Never fully tire of that one for any real length of time.

Control issues — apparently we all got ’em.

Next up, another blast from the past, Michael Jackson’s “Smooth Criminal”:

Which then gets me thinking of (The Artist Formerly Known As) Prince.

Haven’t seen this live performance before. Here’s Prince with Lenny Kravitz playing “American Woman” in concert:

Prince always like to dress so goofy, so flamboyant. lol But that’s cool. That’s him.

I personally have a hard time believing either Prince or Michael Jackson are/were 100% hetero.  ha  Being honest there.  drinking

Wandering around youtube tonight I came up with this concert footage of Prince and CeeLo Green in NYC performing “Crazy”:

Appreciated that. Loved that song since it came out. Bought that Gnarls Barkley album years back and have since worn it out repeatedly.

Lyrics:

I remember when, I remember, I remember when I lost my mind
There was something so pleasant about that place
Even your emotions had an echo
In so much space

And when you’re out there
Without care,
Yeah, I was out of touch
But it wasn’t because I didn’t know enough
I just knew too much

Does that make me crazy?
Does that make me crazy?
Does that make me crazy?
Possibly

And I hope that you are having the time of your life
But think twice, that’s my only advice

Come on now, who do you, who do you, who do you, who do you think you are?
Ha ha ha bless your soul!
You really think you’re in control?

Well, I think you’re crazy
I think you’re crazy
I think you’re crazy
Just like me

My heroes had the heart to lose their lives out on a limb
And all I remember is thinking, I want to be like them
Ever since I was little, ever since I was little it looked like fun
And it’s no coincidence I’ve come
And I can die when I’m done

Maybe I’m crazy
Maybe you’re crazy
Maybe we’re crazy
[Are you crazy?
Am I crazy?]
Probably

Fuckin’ adore that song and have since my very first listening to it shortly after it debuted. Love the lyrics. Though in that live performance they omitted the last stanza and repeated the 3rd and 4th, which was cool too. Hence why I bolded that portion. Yes, the only advice anyone really can meaningfully give to others is to think twice. Consider what you’re doing. Think deeply on whatever it is you are doing, because consequences do come, even from the best of intentions. We all learn this over time. Yet some of us prove incredibly stubborn in acting accordingly.

Anyway, going to look for the album version of that song since it deserves repeating and in full. A good one to “meditate” on, IMO.
