“Robin Williams: Why Funny People Kill Themselves”

This is the best video I’ve watched thus far having anything to do with Robin Williams’ suicide and depression. His insight into the role of comedy in the lives of severely depressed people appears so right on.

It’s tragic, obviously, but on some level not surprising. Williams was a troubled person for most of his life, and the various addictions didn’t help. There is, too, that anyone acclaimed as being the pinnacle of something is ironically being set up for the fall.

It’s interesting how inter-twined comedy and pathos really are — the Greeks understood; it’s part of what underlying the two masks icon. As a favorite quote of mine goes (can’t recall who said it), “Some things are so serious you can only laugh at them.”
